Prisoner of War (POW - @ Stalage Luft 1) Shot down by fighters and crashed near Zwickau on 7/20/44 in B-17 Winnie Frank Joe. Was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross nearly 59-1/2 years later after helping one of the last surviving crew out of his crashing B-17 before exiting behind him. Department of the Air Force Washington, DC 20330-5020 - Special Order G-097 - dated 15 January 2003.
