Ralph LeRoy Pender
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Sent to Drew Field Tampa for crew training prior to going overseas they lived in 'locker-room facilities under the grandstand of a baseball diamond'. He flew on 25 combat missions with the Group at Knettishall, his first to Ludwígshaven in March 1944 on which he was 'scared to death'. On another mission the fuel tanks were punctured, they were just able to make it back to France and land at an airstrip American forces had captured one day earlier. He also flew on the food drops to Holland and to Germany post VE Day to bring back POWs. After the war he drove an ice-cream truck, servicing grocery stores and restaurants.
