Paul McKenny was a Pilot in the 78th Fighter Group/ 84th Fighter Squadron. He was flying P-47D #43-25303 on a strafing mission in the Frankfurt area, Germany on 10 September 1944. Report by 1st Lt Richard L. Baron in MACR 8689 : “Lt Mc Kenny was flying Number Four on my wing in White Flight (…) At about 12:30, on his first pass over the airdrome near Mainbullau, Germany, he pulled up and called me and said he had to belly in.” Baron saw him, made an 180° turn to cover him and called Mc Kenny after coming round, but got no answer. Baron looked for him in nearby fields but never saw Mc Kenny again. In MACR 8689, Mc Kenny reports he was hit at about 50ft altitude while strafing an airfield. His Thunderbolt P-47D #43-25303 was last sighted over the Mainbullau airfield and crashed in the Darmstadt area, according to Mc Kenny; between Dudenhofen and Jügesheim, Germany, according to German Report J-2065. It seems more logical to estimate the crash place as nearer to Jügesheim than Dudenhofen, as the former is about 50km NW of Mainbullau and just 20km NE of Darmstadt. Missing Air Crew Report – MACR 8689. Prisoner of War (POW).
