Paul F Shipe
MilitaryETTG, Forkner crew. 381st BG, 534th BS. Shot down 17 August 1943 in B-17 #42-3227. Mission #20 "Black Tuesday" to the ball bearing works at Schweinfurt, Germany. MACR 661. Evaded. EE report 237.
Shamokin, PA
S/Sgt Shipe was hidden in a brush pile by a local boy. A German officer fired into the brush line multiple times after the search couldn't find him. He was taken to Jan Mulders farm by the local fire department. Jan Mulders was a former Dutch army member who had twice escaped German prison camps. Sgt Shipe was questioned by a man named Fahnstahn and two women but was unsure about them and didn't answer their questions. The three were later found to have had 7 American flyers captured. A local fire lieutenant told Sgt Shipe that the three had "gone under water". He was moved around and paired up with Harry Penny and John Dix of the RAF. They were flown back to England on 29 November 1943 via Spain and Gibraltar.
