Not yet 19, Milton Andersen enlisted in the Air Corps in June 1942. He trained as a bomber pilot and was sent overseas, assigned to the 34th Bomb Group / 4th Bomb Squadron in England. After flying with the 4th Squadron on 3 missions on B-24 Liberators and 4 on B-17 Flying Fortresses, he was transferred to the 491st Squadron in the middle of October 1944. He flew the rest of his missions with that Squadron on B17s and completed his tour on 21 February 1945 with 35 bombing missions to his credit. He stayed in the Air Force after the war and served in Korea flying special missions, retiring from the service in 1953.
