Michael David O'Grady was the son of Patrick D. and Minnie May (Ferguson) O'Grady. He was born in Spokane, WA, earned a law degree from Gonzaga University and joined the army in 1942. While serving as an infantryman and guarding an oil installation in Southern California, he was accepted into the Aviation Cadet program and graduated with pilot class 43-G at Williams Field, Arizona, on 23 July 1943.
