Louis Peter Alexander
MilitaryLouis Peter Alexander from Milwaukee, Wisconsin enlisted in the US Army Air Forces in June 1942, and was assigned to the 480th Sub Depot of the 493rd Bomb Group at Debach in April 1944. During his service Alexander befriended six-year-old June Palmer, an evacuee from Tottenham, and often traded his cigarette ration for sweets to gift her. In April 1945, Alexander met Margaret 'Rita' Georgina Edwards (1928-2006), whom he would go on marry in 1950. Alexander returned to the US in June 1945 on account of contracting tuberculosis, June continued to write to Alexander during his hospitalisation, and for many years after. Alexander died in 2005.
