Landon Clifford Hendricks
Military ROLL OF HONOURARowe95
Pilot, Hendricks/ Withers crew. Squadron Commander. 381st BG, 533rd BS. Shot down 9 October 1943 in B-17 #42-30012. Mission #37 to the Focke-Wulf plant at Anklam, Germany. MACR 887. Killed in Action (KIA).
Major Hendricks was returning from the mission with the #1 engine smoking after a rocket attack. As they flew out over the North Sea, he figured he was out of fighter danger and pulled out of formation as to not slow down the group. Command was transferred to Lt Gleichauf and Major Hendricks waved his hand out of the pilot's window to urge the formation on. Soon the aircraft was attacked by fighters who started the #2 and #3 engines aflame. Six parachutes were observed. The aircraft exploded as it hit the water. Name on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge AMC.
