Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 26 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
He had been employed constructing sections of the B-24 before being drafted in early 1943. After training as a gunner he shipped to England in March 1944 to join the Group at Sudbury. He flew on 25 combat missions, during which time the Group changed from the B-24 to the B-17. On a mission to Berlin flack knocked out their oxygen supply and they had to abort. He says that they were woken up around midnight for breakfast and briefing only to be informed one third of the time that the mission was cancelled.
