Staff Sergeant Joseph B. Michalski was born February 3, 1922. His next of kin were his mother, Sadie Michalski, and his brother, Leo Michalski. He was from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was a Gunner aboard B-17 tail #44-6304 of the 305th Bomb Group, 422nd Bomb Squadron, when it crashed over Vollradisroda, Germany, on August 16, 1944. Of the crew of ten on board, only the pilot, 2nd LT Darrell V. Betz, survived.

He is buried in the US Military Cemetery at Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium.
