Spartanburg, SC, USA | 7 September 2012 | Spartanburg, S.C. - James R. Riggs, Sr., 89, of Summit Hills Retirement Community passed away on September 6, 2012. He was born on December 25, 1922, in Raleigh, N.C. to Solomon Graham and Bessie Mauney Riggs. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Mattox Riggs formerly of Lynchburg, Va.; a son, James R. Riggs, Jr.; a daughter, Mary Riggs Sarrells; grandchildren, Scott Sarrells, Jason Sarrells, Traci Riggs and Ashley Riggs; one great grandchild, Evan Sarrells; and numerous nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his brother, Solomon Graham Riggs, Jr. and sister, Dorothy Lyman. Mr. Riggs attended Lynchburg College and N.C. State University before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corp serving as an officer and a B-24 pilot during WWII. He served as an Elder at First Christian Church in Tampa, Fl., was an active member in the Sertoma Club and was a member of the Carolina Mountain Woodturners Club in Asheville, N.C. |
