Ira L Krammes
MilitaryFrom a group photo of crew members taken in Rapid City, S.D. by my late father-in-law, Alton R. Karoli, when he was Navigator on B-17 My Baby.
Prisoner of War (POW). Had mechanical failure and crashed near Toul in B-17 My Baby 42-107033 on 9/5/44.
With the 322nd Squadron 91st Bomber Group Krammes was Top Turret Gunner on 'My Baby' when the plane was shot down on the Ludwigshaven raid of 5th September 1944. The tail gunner had been killed but - of the eight men who jumped that day - seven of the crew evaded with the help of the French Resistance. Krammes was unfortunately caught and spent the rest of the war in captivity.
