Howard Albert Muchow
MilitaryAssigned 550BS, 385BG, 8AF USAAF. 35 x missions. ETD
"On 10th April 1945, Lieutenant Howard Muchow and his crew flew a mission from their Great Ashfield base to Neuruppin near Berlin. The bomb load was delivered to the target.
While turning back towards home, the heavy four-engine bomber was damaged by heavy anti-aircraft fire. One engine was on fire, a second was just idling. At times, two Mustang fighter planes provided escort for the bomber, which was now flying alone. When the pilot realized that he would not be able to reach the home base in England, he gave the crew the option to parachute out. He himself definitely wanted to bring the aircraft behind his own front line.
At the level of the German-Dutch border, Mucky (his nickname) discovered a large clearing of around 3000 feet (approx. 1000m). Without knowing it, he had found the B.100 airfield (later RAF Laarbruch). He floated into a large curve with the landing gear extended. The ground troops fired a red flare, the international signal not to land. However, the Flying Fortress could not take off with only two engines. Pilot Muchow ended his 33rd enemy flight over Germany with a clean landing. The crew and pilot survived the landing unscathed. According to 'Mucky' his crew was treated quite rudely and unfriendly by the Canadian ground troops. At least the Canadian officer in command gave him a receipt for his plane. The crew was then taken to the Dutch border, from where they had to make their own way to their home base in England (on foot, hitchhiking, with military convoys). Lieutenant Muchow had to fly two more missions before he could return to the United States."
Awards: DFC, AM (5OLC), EAME (3BS), WWII Victory.
