Born and raised in Oklahoma, Harold Morris studied at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond City. After two years at College there, he moved to Pensacola, Florida. He enlisted in the Air Corps in January 1942 in Oklahoma and followed training courses as a fighter pilot. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, he was first assigned on 9 January 1943 to the 353rd Fighter Group / 351st Fighter Squadron. On 17 March 1943, he was involved in a taxiing accident piloting P-47C # 41-6485 at Millville AAB in New Jersey. Sent overseas, he served in that Group until January 1944, being credited with 2 Me109s damaged in air combat, one on 19 August, another on 20 October 1943. Transferred to the 78th Fighter Group / 82nd Fighter Squadron to Duxford. Flying with the 83rd Squadron, Lt Morris shared with Lt Boyd W. Sorenson the destruction in flight of a German Fw190 fighter on a bomber escort mission to Metz on 25 April 1944. Harold Morris was killed on a fighter-bomber mission 26 July 1944 when he wasn’t able to pull out of a dive after strafing a truck on a road near the French-Belgian border.
