Eric Downs

Eric Downs trained as an RAF pilot on Course 9/11 at #4BFTS Falcon Field from 2nd May 1942 to 19th February 1943. He returned from Falcon Field as an instructor flying Lancasters and in his log book there are nearly 300 names of pilots he trained. Sqn Ldr Downs MBE, DFC then spent 30 years in the RAF in Bomber Command, flying 22 different planes from 182 airfields. He was awarded the DFC for “Exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy in the air" and an MBE for organising the World Gliding Championships. He was interviewed by the Falcon Field Association:The Next Generation and the BBC for his 100th birthday when a Spitfire flypast was arranged. He died in 2023 aged 102 and was a shining example of the contribution made by #4BFTS cadets.
