On a mission to Klein Machnow, Berlin on 6 Mar 1944, another B-17 from the 388th went out of control after being attacked by fighters and collided with B-17G 42-40054 which exploded and crashed SE of Emmen, Holland. Prisoner of War (POW).

Lancaster, PA | 24 September 2009 | Elbert Moyer, 86, of Lancaster, died Thursday, September 24th, 2009 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Betty Jane (Newport) Moyer, who died in 1993. Born January 2, 1923 in Bethlehem, PA he was a son of the late Warren and Martha (Kluge) Moyer. Elbert served in the U.S. Army Air Force in WW II. He flew in the 388th Bomb Group in the first daylight raid on Berlin. After being shot down, he survived as a POW and was awarded 9 service medals including the Purple Heart. He was a Life Member of Millersville VFW. He was a general contractor and home builder in the Lancaster area. He is survived by 2 sons, Elbert P. Jr. and wife Cynthia, and Robert D., both of Lancaster; 2 daughters, Beverly A. of Lancaster and Bonnie Musser of Ephrata, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. |
