Oklahoma City, OK | 6 February 2004 | Obituary, The Oklahoman, February 8, 2004 Earl D. Hiller 1921-2004. Earl was born July 22, 1921 in Portage, Wisconsin to Leona and Lester C. Hiller. The family moved to Rio, Wisconsin and the majority of his youth was spent there. He graduated from Rio High School in 1940 and immediately went into the Army serving on active duty, with the Wisconsin National Guard Unit, activated in 1940. As a Platoon Sergeant he trained recruits for two years in Louisiana before joining the Air Force, February 1942 and being assigned to Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma City. After being trained as an Aerial Gunner at Harlingen, Texas, he was returned to Will Rogers Field for assignment to the 47th Bomb Group of A20 Aircraft with which he served in North Africa, Malta, Sicily and Italy, flying 53 missions before returning to the United States. Earl served as a Gunnery instructor at Ardmore Army Air Base in Ardmore, Oklahoma and was discharged from active duty on June 6, 1945. He married Rosemary Culmer in 1944 to which union two sons were born; Dwain Earl and Ralph Edgar Hiller. He graduated from Oklahoma University with a B.S. Degree in 1949 as well as a Masters of Education degree in 1953. He practiced his teaching profession of forty years at Putnam City High School, Capitol Hill Senior High School, Casady School and Oklahoma City University. At Casady he served as Chairman of the Math Department and Dean of Students. Upon retirement in 1985 Earl and his wife became Tour Directors for Oklahoma Retired Citizens Travel Club, which he also served as President and Tour Coordinator. With his wife he took Senior Citizens to New Zealand, Australia, China, Scandinavia, Europe, Alaska and South America as well as tours within the United States for the next 14 years. Volunteerism continued to be very important to Earl when he became a charter member of the Bone and Joint Hospital Volunteer Program and volunteered 3 days a week for the next six years. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for over 58 years where he sang in the choir, taught the Builders Sunday School and presided as Chairman of the Board. He was elected President of the Builders Class Program from its beginning at Wesley. |
