Joined RAFVR, flew Spitfires with 152 and 64 Squadrons then 71 Eagle Sqn RAF. He transferred to 133 [Eagle] Sqn RAF. He transferred to the 4th FG 336th FS in Sept 1942 and flew 119 missions in P-47s. Later in November 1943 he transferred to the 356th FS.
