Between February 5, 1944 and May 8, 1944 he flew 30 missions as a pilot or co-pilot. Twenty-two of the missions were deep into Germany, six to Berlin. After finishing the 30 missions he was transferred to the 312th Ferry Squadron at Langford Lodge in Northern Ireland. From there he flew an assortment of aircraft to bases and modification centers.
After the war, Kit stayed in the US Air Force serving 15 years in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) flying B-36s and B-52s. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for safely landing a huge B-36 Peacemaker with no elevator control. Kit also served as the Director of Aircraft Maintenance for the 7th Air Force in Viet Nam. He retired from the USAF after 33 years of service.
