Crew of "Tornado" (B-17, 42-39924) 334th Bomb Squadron, 95th Bomb Group, 8th AF. Shortly after this picture was taken, the crew ditched on fire into the North Sea and were rescued by a British sea plane though the waist and tail gunners were lost in ditching.

KIA on 22 April 1944 when the Top Turret of his aircraft caught fire and the crew were forced to bail out. Smiley was knocked unconscious he either could not escape or was held up by his crew members until they could no longer support him.
