SSGT Major was the Right Waist Gunner aboard B-17 tail #44-6304 of the 305th Bomb Group, 442nd Bomb Squadron, when it crashed over Vollradisroda, Germany, on August 16, 1944. Of the crew of ten on board, only the pilot, 2nd LT Darrell V. Betz, survived.
He is buried in Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.
