Burl enlisted in August 1942 but was not called until August '43 while at college. He was accepted for pilot training and commissioned in March 1944. After crewing up and further training they flew to England and the 398thBG at Nuthampstead. He completed his 35 missions on March 10 1945 and was discharged that August . He afterwards completed a Masters in Music Education, taught school and was variously an administrator and farmer.
