Caputo was in the Ops Office on D-Day for 36 hours, fielding good luck wishes from the President down and organising two missions in support of the ground troops. He was used as a replacement pilot on several missions. Back in the USA he was ferrying planes to the 'graveyard' until his discharge in October 1945.
