His account of mission:
'When returning from a Berlin raid, on the eighth of May, 1944, our fortress, 'Old Massa', suffered two direct flak hits. One of which severed the tail section off just forward of the tail wheel. The left ammo box was bent inward from the explosion, and I found myself trapped in my rear gun position. I was wounded, and lost consciousness. When I came-to, I felt the tail roll over once, then unconsciousness again. We fell, myself and the tail, 24,000 feet, and finally landed on a small guard hut, where the Germans found me. '
