Casualty lifted from B-17 42-38155. Circa May 1944. There is confusion re the aircraft identity. It is identified as 43-38429 at https://b17flyingfortress.de/en/?s=nicotine and at http://306bgus.verio.com/archives/htm/Nose%20Art.html Please show a source which identifies it as 42-38155. 43-38429 was a B-17G-85-BO which were all unpainted natural metal. It is impossible for this photograph to show 43-38429. The data block painted on the nose of this B-17 clearly says B-17G-25-DL, though it is actually a 30-DL. The start of the serial number is also visible in the data block as 42-38. This Nicotine Nelly was named by Donald R Ross, bombardier, who flew 42-38155. He is in the crew photo of this plane. There is also a project number painted on the nose of this B-17 - 92420-R, which shows it flew to the UK in Jan/Feb 1944. 43-38429 wasn't delivered until August 1944.
