NARA
Originally assigned to the 445th Bomb Group at Tibenham, but transferred to the 448th Bomb Group, 713th Bomb squadron before flying any missions with the 445th. On 2 Oct 1944 the aircraft was on a mission to Hamm, Germany (448th BG Mission #157, 8th AF Mission #659) when the bomb bay doors jammed. While attempting to free the doors the bombardier accidently salvoed the bombs. On return to Seething the crew found a bomb was still hanging in the rack. The crew flew back over the North Sea & the bomb was pried loose. Returning again to Seething the #2 engine caught fire. The pilot, Lt. Charles Platt, was able to land safely. Inspection revealed that the fire had almost burned through the wing spar. The aircraft was salvaged 6 Oct, 1944.
