On 13 June 1944, pilot 1Lt. Burleigh E. Curtis participated in a dive-bombing attack on a bridge near Briouze, France. His approach was too low; the aircraft was hit by the bomb blast, crashed, and exploded in a pasture 2km from the bridge.
Lt. Curtis was buried at the scene of the crash by French civilians, and the grave marked with a propeller.
