On a Bomber support mission 9 April 1944, Thomas Forbes’ P-47 #42-76215 was hit by Flak and/or damaged by the explosion of a locomotive his Flight was strafing in Argentan, Calvados, France. Oil pressure dropped to zero, he bailed out at 2000ft, last seen to the South of Caen. According to German Reports, the Thunderbolt crashed either near Houlgate or near "Cainet", 17km NW of Caen... There is no locality with that name and it could be the place was La Caine, ±20km SW of Caen, an area which corresponds to witnesses' statements in the Missing Air Crew Report – MACR 4105.
