P-47 Serial #42-75345 of the 406th Fighter Bomber Group/512th Fighter Bomber Squadron was stationed at Ashford, Kent. On 22 June 1944, it was flown by 2nd Lt Lyon E. Agee Jr on a low-level bombing and strafing mission on German units in the Cherbourg area, France.



The formation was attacked by German fighters and Agee reported to wingman 1st Lt Creighton A. Smith that he had been hit. His P-47 was last seen flying above the southern edge of Cherbourg, heading for England. No trace was ever found of him nor of his plane and they were lost in the English Channel.
