42-52432 Bachelor's Paradise

On its way to the objective, Tutow, Germany, B24 #42-52432 and its formation reached Denmark. They met a high bank of clouds running North-South at 26,000ft. The order was given to spread out and fly through the clouds on a 90-degree course. Coming out on the other side, the formation was immediately attacked by fighters before they could get back into formation. 42-52432 was attacked head-on by 2 BF109s whose hits destroyed the two inboard engines and the electrical system. Pilot Byron Logie told Flight Engineer Scott to bail out with the wounded Navigator Jacobson so the latter could rapidly be treated. It was decided to try to reach neutral Sweden, but another attack by a Bf109 shot out the third engine. The alarm bell was sounded and some other crew members bailed out. Four were Killed In Action (KIA) : Ball Turret gunner John H. Schramm, Right Waist Gunner Fred E. Stiles, Left Waist gunner Edward W. Cisek and Tail Gunner Sidney Sheren. Three were made Prisoners of War (POW) : Navigator Bernard A. Jacobson, Bombardier Walter J. Kita and Top Turret gunner Walter E. Scott. Three managed to evade capture (EVD): Pilot Byron E. Logie, Co-Pilot George D. Reed and Radio Operator Thomas R. Murphy. Crashed Venslev, 8km East of Skælskør (35km SE of Slagelse), Denmark. Missing Air Crew Report - MACR 3838.
