AAF accident report
Crashed: 24 May 1944 @ 1205 hrs (Pilot error)
1Lt Keith E Canella was leading a formation of three P-38 on a training mission near RAF Wattisham.
On approach to the runway, Lt Canella was too low and failed to adjust for the rise on this runway.
As he hit the ground, Lt Canella pulled-up, turned slightly to the left, clearing a grove of trees. The P-38 then struck a hanger, burst into flames then crashed down on a concrete apron on the far side of the hanger.
Pilot was able to extricate himself before aircraft was consumed by fire.
