Assigned to 334FS, 4FG 8AF USAAF. A/C abandoned an hour into mission to Posen. Pilot bailed out for unknown reasons 30 miles E of Southwold, Suffolk. ASR A/C spotted him in the Channel 9 minutes after launching 150 yards from his dinghy, struggling with his still attached chute. When the rescue launch reached the location they found only an empty dinghy with Pierce’s name on it. KIA. MACR 4810.
