The B-24D Liberator, 41-23724, named, Flying Cock, and, Doodlebug, from the 512th Bomb Squadron, in the 376th Bomb Group, and the 8th Air Force in the U.K. was temporarily detached (TDY) to the 9th Air Force in North Africa. Originally assigned to 409th Bomb Squadron, the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 8th Air Force, the bomber was badly damaged in a crash landing because of battle damage. 15 Jan 43. After being repaired, the plane was transferred to the 512th Bomb Squadron, in the 376th Bomb Group, and was flown on Operation Tidal Wave, the Ploesti oil refinery mission, piloted by James A. McAtee, and returned safely to Libya. The plane ended her days as a transport plane for the 449th Bomb Group.
