B-24 Liberator

B-24 Liberator 41-11817 'Stinger' participated in the 1st Aug 43 Ploesti oil refinery raid returning safely to Libya with only one crew member WIA. On Operation Tidal Wave, 'STINGER''s pilot was Lt. Andrew Opsta. And it's navigator was Maj Howard Lalonde. While initially stationed in Britain, Opsta and LaLonde was deployed with the 389th Bombardment Group to Hethel England in June of 1943. Shortly after arriving the 389th BG temporarily moved to Benghazi Libya in preparation for Operation Tidal Wave. He may have participated in several missions prior to Operation Tidal Wave. While in Libya Major LaLonde and his bomber crew were temporarily detached to the 98th BG and assigned the B24D Bomber 41-11817, nicknamed “Stinger”. Family archive photos, as well as photos on the internet, show that his “regular” plane probably was the B24D Bomber 42-40776 nicknamed “Old Blister Butt”. Major Lalonde’s wife Glenda’s name is below the window where the navigator was stationed on the plane. This plane also flew in Operation Tidal Wave with the 389th BG, manned with another crew.
