The B-24D, named, Teggie Ann, 42-40664, flown on Operation Tidal Wave, by Col. Keith K. Compton, should not be mistaken for two other B-24Ds, 41-23754, and, 41-11613, that also were named, Teggie Ann, and were in the 8th Air Force in the U.K. in 1942-43. Later, 41-23754, Teggie Ann, had it's name changed to, Little Lady.
And the B-24D, 42-40664, should not be mistaken for the third B-24D, named, Teggie Ann, in the 8th Air Force, the B-24D, 41-11613, named, Florine Juju, Liberandos, Teggie Ann, and last named, The Blue Streak. It was also in the 8th Air Force, and the 376th Bomb Group. The Blue Streak, had a long, amazing, and successful combat history, but did not fly on the 1943 low level Ploesti mission. It was sent home to Fort Worth, Texas, in the U.S. in late in 1943, for a nationwide war bond tour in 1944, flown by Lt. John S. Young.
The B-24D Liberator bomber, 42-40664, named, Honey Chile, Liberandos, and, Teggie Ann, was in the 8th Air Force, the 376th Bomb Group, and the 515th Bomb Squadron. It flew on Operation Tidal Wave, the August 1, 1943, bombing mission over the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania, and was flown by Element Leader, Col. Keith K. Compton, with Mission Commander, Gen. Uzal Ent, who ordered Col. Compton to turn away from Ploesti at his first (and wrong) IP (Targovisti) and fly toward Bucharest, which Compton did. Col. Compton, eventually, did turn back to the north and west toward Ploesti, but, according to Gen. Ent's orders, he never did attack and bomb his assigned target at Ploesti, nor did he lead the planes and men following him to their targets. But, instead, he dropped his bombs harmlessly over the hills north of Ploesti. He and his crew, including Gen. Ent, returned to base (RTB) at Benghazi, Libya, unharmed. 1 Aug 1943.
B-24D with serial number, 42-40664, Honey Chile - Liberandos - Teggie Ann, was later being flown by Pilot, Lt. Donaldson B. Hurd, when it was shot down by a German fighter on a mission over Foggia, Italy. Lt. Hurd and his crew bailed out of, Teggie Ann, and survived the mission. Teggie Ann, crashed at Melfi, Italy, and Failed To Return (FTR). The entire crew was able to bail out successfully and were captured. 10 POW. The shoot down was credited to the German pilot, Unteroffizier Martin Muller in a Bf-109G-6 from JG 3/12. 16, Aug 1943. MACR 298.
