B-24 Liberator

This B-24D, 41-23816, in the 8th Air Force, TDY to the 9th Air Force, the 44th Bomb Group, and the 68th Bomb Squadron, should not be confused with another B-24D, 41-23661, in the 9th Air Force, the 98th Bomb Group, and the 345th Bomb Squadron, also named, Black Jack.

The B-24D, Black Jack, 41-23816, was flown by it's Pilot, Lt. Colemans S. Whitaker, on the Ploesti mission and returned to home base. 1 Aug, 43.

Later, after the Ploesti mission, and after returning to Shipdham in the UK with the 8th Air force, the B-24D, Black Jack, 41-23816, was shot down and failed to return (FTR) from a bombing mission over the Bf-109 assembly works in Wiener Nuestadt, Austria. The airplane was hit by flak, which set it's bomb bay on fire. It fell into an uncontrollable spin, and crashed. Five crewmembers were killed in action. - 5 KIA . Six crewmembers bailed out, were captured, and became prisoners of war. - 6 POW. Oct 1, 1943. MACR 3312.
